What is happening in the Bahamas Union of Teachers, and with some of our wayward teachers who insist on not being professional, is not merely unprofessional — it is heartbreaking.
Is Belinda Wilson, the union leader entrusted with the minds and futures of children, deliberately attempting to block their examinations? This is a betrayal that cuts to the core of what education stands for. This behaviour is not a mistake or a misunderstanding. It is a calculated act designed to create havoc, to hold children’s progress hostage, and to force a spotlight where it was never deserved.
This goes beyond selfishness. It is an act that wounds the very spirit of the classroom. While students look to their teachers for guidance, stability, and hope, this behaviour delivers only confusion, fear, and disruption. The idea that their future could be toyed with for personal leverage is devastating — and utterly unacceptable.
Children deserve better than to be used as pawns in Belinda’s quest for relevance. Their dreams, their grades, their confidence — all depend on a system they trust. No child should face doubt or disruption that erodes their trust in the education system built to support them. And while this chaos unfolds, the teachers who continue to stand firm, who do not follow the President’s directives, who remain committed to the children’s well-being — they are the ones carrying the weight of responsibility. Their dedication exposes just how reckless and destructive this disruptive behaviour truly is.
Let it be said without hesitation: this behaviour is a direct attack on the heart of education. It tramples on children’s hopes, undermines colleagues, and shatters the trust parents place in the system. No educator who truly cares for children would ever inflict such turmoil on them.
This is a moment that demands clarity and courage. The behaviour must be condemned, loudly and unmistakably, because our children — their growth, their future, their dignity — must always come first. The community and stakeholders have a vital role in demanding transparency and accountability to protect our shared future. Anything less is a profound injustice to every student who walks through a school’s doors with faith in the adults guiding them.
The question is, why are the powers not demanding a thorough investigation into the misuse of union funds? Such action is essential to restore trust and ensure accountability, so this issue can finally be put to rest.
