The political atmosphere in The Bahamas has reached a fever pitch, but not because of a healthy debate on policy or vision. Instead, what we are witnessing from the Free National Movement (FNM) is a masterclass in political desperation. Livid, unhinged, and clearly rattled, Michael Pintard and his team have moved past the point of constructive opposition and into the realm of pure fantasy. They are throwing anything and everything against the wall, praying that a single piece of mud sticks before the Prime Minister finally rings the bell.
The latest “scandal” they’ve manufactured—the breathless hollering about “dead people” on the voters’ list—is perhaps their most transparent act yet. It is a page lifted directly from the Donald Trump playbook: when you know the numbers aren’t in your favour, start attacking the integrity of the process. It is a dangerous, “burn-it-all-down” strategy that shows they are prepared to throw the baby out with the bathwater just to stay relevant.
A Process in Motion
The irony of the FNM’s outcry is that they are complaining about a process that is explicitly designed to address their very concerns. The Parliamentary Registration Department is currently engaged in a massive, modernization-focused cleanup of the register. This includes the rollout of new biometric voter cards and a rigorous verification exercise.
The process is tedious by design. Why? Because thousands of Bahamians have moved, requiring transfers and geospatial pinning to ensure they are voting in the correct constituencies. You cannot simply wave a magic wand and “fix” a list of 200,000 names overnight. Verification is the safeguard. Yet, the FNM is acting as if a work-in-progress is a finished product of fraud.
“There can be no conclusion to the process until all of those things are done. To complain about the state of the list while the cleanup is actively happening is like complaining that a house is messy while the maid is still holding the broom.”
The Logic of the Absurd
Perhaps the most laughable part of this “dead man voting” narrative is the FNM’s own admission. They are reportedly complaining about names on the list of people they themselves claim have passed away, many of whom were known FNM supporters.
Let’s apply some common sense: what would it profit the government or any entity to keep deceased persons on a register? A dead person cannot walk into a polling station. The training for presiding officers is specifically designed to catch anyone attempting to use documents that don’t belong to them. Unless the FNM is suggesting that the PLP has mastered necromancy, their argument falls flat. If a name remains on the list temporarily, it is simply because the bureaucratic bridge between the Births and Deaths Registry and the Parliamentary Department is still being crossed.
The Landslide Reality
So, why the theatrics? The answer lies in the data. Recent poll numbers from Public Domain have reportedly sent shockwaves through the FNM headquarters. The numbers point toward a Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) landslide—a reflection of a country that prefers “Brave” Davis’s steady hand over the internal chaos of the opposition.
The FNM is a party in freefall. When a titan of their own organization like Dame Janet Bostwick honestly admits that the FNM is facing an uphill battle and essentially “finished” in its current state, you know the end is near. Between Hubert Minnis running as an independent in Killarney and Pintard struggling to keep his own base from “eating their hats” in frustration, the FNM has retreated into a state of collective hallucination.
Conclusion: A Scary Behaviour
There is something truly scary about the behaviour of the current FNM leadership. By attempting to undermine the public’s faith in our electoral system, they are damaging the very democracy they claim to protect. Their desperation is palpable, and their tactics are becoming increasingly erratic.
As the election draws near, we must pray for their mental state and stay vigilant. The hallucinations will only get worse as the reality of a landslide defeat sets in. The FNM isn’t fighting for the Bahamian people anymore; they are fighting for their own survival, and they don’t care who they step on—dead or alive—to do it.
