A disturbing spirit of entitlement has consumed the civil service. Some deserving have been overlooked, and some who should not be promoted, at least not at the expense of the worthy, have been promoted. However, the many variations of criteria, including seniority, performance, and qualifications, needed to make the final determination escape me.
The Bahamas watched with dismay and was shocked to see what happened at the Immigration promotion exercise.
Ms. Eugenia Poitier’s sickening behaviour after being disappointed is a stark example of the attitudes prevalent in our authorities. Her blatant disrespect for her superiors has not only led the public to question her suitability for her position but has also incited widespread outrage against her treatment of her subordinates.
Her contempt and disrespect shocked everyone and have taken over social media. Her well-executed plan to embarrass her superiors sets a bad example for junior officers to follow. There can be no explanation for her rudeness. Her reputation precedes her.
There are also rumours circulating of allegations of a boyfriend involved in immigration-related crimes like human trafficking and drugs. These allegations alone make her unsuitable to hold any position in Immigration, and she should also be thoroughly investigated, and let the chips fall where they may.
We wait with baited breath to see if she gets away with such crass behaviour. It must be clear to the people in authority that if she is not demoted or reprimanded to satisfy the public for disrespecting her superiors in public, then it would prove what has been said for decades: that some people could get away with all manner of indiscretions and others can’t.
The Director of Immigration, the Permanent Secretary, and the Minister of Immigration must urgently take decisive action to address these issues.
