The 21st-century facility was a project which began last year, spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Nassau (RCN). RCN President Charlyne Sealy addressed the students during a brief assembly dubbed, “The Power of a Reader’s Mind”. She encouraged the children to “become students of the world by traveling the world one book at a time”. Mrs. Sealy noted that the project was one that her organization felt was “worthy” of their assistance.

“Realizing that a school’s library is at the heart of academia and an essential element in a school’s learning programme, the Rotary Club of Nassau designed a space where students will learn to enjoy literature, history, science, math, do research, or simply relax with a book.” Mrs. Sealy said.
Apart from Rotarians, Ministry of Education officials was also in attendance. Education Director Marcellus Taylor in bringing remarks reiterated the value of the library. “We believe that the library should be the nucleus of the school because it reflects learning. It is a place where you get information. It is a space where you as individuals can go and not only receive that information but engage in that information.” Mr. Taylor said.
Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) was also a part of the ceremonies and presented a surprise donation to the school. BPL Representative Donovan Moxey announced the company’s donation of $2,000.00 to the library. “From our perspective, we have to nurture the young minds into thinking about science technology because these young people are the next generations of Bahamians who will be working at BPL.” Mr. Moxey noted.
Meanwhile, the audience was entertained by students of the school’s Music Department. The little musicians and dancers offered a spunky cultural rendition. This was succeeded by a Junkanoo rush-out led by another group of students. Immediately following the formal ceremony, was the Ribbon Cutting and blessing of the new library, performed by Father Donald Kerr of St. Barnabas Parish.
The library project was completed as a result of a partnership among the RCN, a Rotary Club in Florida, the Ministry of Education, the local business community and Stephen Dillet Primary School (SDP). The completion of this project follows a number of substantial donations made to SDP School by the RCN.
