CIVIL SERVICE IS UNCIVILIZED?
Minister of the Public Service Pia Glover-Rolle has been a beacon of hope in her tireless efforts to transform the public service’s culture and conduct. Her initiatives, such as comprehensive training programs and a restructured system to ensure deserving employees receive their rightful salary adjustments and long-overdue promotions, pave the way for a reformed civil service. Her efforts, like a guiding light, inspire hope for a brighter future, instilling a sense of optimism in us all.
Some boast that upward mobility is possible, thus giving them hope that should help their performance improve, for the most part. Of course, some still complain; many are lazy and only want the salary but do not work. We must not forget those who would die for a “Government Job” but never come to work. They ignore the fact that they are supposed to serve the public.
Be that as it may, some in critical positions are adamant that they will not change. They are continuing to keep business as usual. This stagnation not only hinders progress but also leads to inefficiencies and a waste of resources. Things that could be done in a day intentionally stalled, nothing that buying them lunch cannot fix. It’s time to break this cycle of complacency and inefficiency.
The perceived sabotage in the Public Service by some who are systematically hiding documents, shredding documents, and stalling even more to ensure the government agenda does not get done is commonplace. Many, in the afternoon of their lives, do not accommodate new blood and ideas and would love things to remain as they were.
Of course, blatant irresponsibility and dereliction of duty have hampered many projects from getting off the ground, creating a bottleneck and disgruntled public that blames the government for being insensitive or just plain old and disinterested. This lack of accountability not only damages the reputation of the civil service but also erodes public trust. It’s time to hold individuals accountable for their actions and ensure that projects are delivered on time and to the expected standard.
It’s crucial to recognize that the world is rapidly evolving, and the Bahamas cannot afford to cling to outdated systems. The era of traditional methods is over. The laptop has replaced the typewriter, and advanced technology has superseded the calculator. The call for change is not just a suggestion; it’s an urgent necessity that demands our immediate attention and action.
Google has replaced the encyclopedia; information is readily available quickly, and there is no excuse for ignorance. Email has replaced the post office. Storing information in “the cloud” has replaced filing cabinets. Writing in entry books with dog ears is disgusting; when the book disappears vital information is lost.
But there is a reluctance to purge the civil service of these misfits at the ankle of progress. The inability to grab the bull by the horns and dump the people contaminating a system with all the potential to be good will not reap good fruit.
It must be clear that civil servants can be fired for insubordination and other ills, just like everyone else. It is foolhardy to think bad behaviour has no consequences in a civilized world.
While it’s evident that these individuals are undermining the system, their desire to maintain cordial relations with everyone is puzzling. The time has come for resolute decisions. We must unite, prepared to overhaul the system, remove the deadwood, and replace it with fresh, resilient timber that can withstand the test of time. It’s a call to action that should ignite our determination and motivation for change.
