The Bahamas has been rocked by the most powerful hurricane in history, with winds from 185mph, gusting to 200. The results were beyond catastrophic. The wind howled, the water rose, which swallowed cars, homes, boats, and businesses.
The most destruction occurred when the seas swelled angrily.
People took refuge in attics and tops of roofs. But the devastation that was experienced grew when there was no place to run, no place to hide. Families were separated, some even expressed seeing them go underwater, never to be seen again.
Now, after all the winds have died down, and the water has receded, reality has set in. Where are our families? Are they in shelters, have they been rescued, what happened?
Today we are slowly getting the full picture of what happened. The full magnitude is being realized as the greatest natural disaster for The Bahamas.
The Prime Minister, The Most Honourable, Hubert Alexander Minnis is currently, cautiously announcing conservative death toll numbers. We believe that he is doing this to spare the anxious people who are already exhausted, themselves looking for relatives.
The first count of five was a mild joke, mainly because a considerably higher number was already being circulated from the graphic pictures shown on social media.
The puzzling question is, why is the real number being suppressed? What are the benefits of this deception? Duane Sands has inserted himself into the calculated management of how the information would be disseminated.
There are confirmed reports that several hundred body bags have been requested. Why?
The cold hard facts are that the people who have been smelling the stench of dead bodies everywhere are conservatively saying that several hundred deaths are an understatement.
It is high time we stop the unnecessary deception, that is adding insult to injury.
If the people are not in the shelters, nor left the island, then they are missing! Sad to say, that many missing may have been washed out to sea.
The process of headcounts and listing all of the names not present would be an easy way of determining who has expired. If we start with the verified social media pictures of truckloads of bodies that have been fished out of the floodwaters and dismantled homes, we would have a glimpse into an approximation of the body count.
Minnis and Sands “tiptoeing through the tulips” is not giving the country or international community a clear picture of what is going on! Where is our Defence Force?
