Parents Wait 24 Hours to Report Missing Child: Tragic Death Shocks Nation
The heartbreaking discovery of a young girl’s lifeless body on Faith Avenue has sparked national outrage and grief, compounded by questions over the delay in reporting her disappearance.
Twelve-year-old Adriel Moxey was reported missing on Tuesday by her family, nearly 24 hours after she was last seen. Her body was discovered later that evening, lying on her back with only a top on and a piece of cloth tied tightly around her neck. Police believe she may have been walking alone along a dark, unlit track road—a route she used daily to return home after participating in after-school activities.
Adriel’s mother reportedly fell asleep Monday evening, unaware her daughter was missing until the following morning. The child’s father, who also resides in the household, was similarly unaware of her absence during the night. The family delayed reporting the disappearance until the next day, a decision that has drawn widespread criticism as authorities and the public grapple with whether more immediate action might have changed the tragic outcome.
Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander, speaking at an emotional press briefing, vowed to bring the perpetrator to justice. “We will leave no stone unturned. This is a tragedy of the worst kind, and justice will be served.”
Prime Minister Philip Davis also expressed his deep sorrow and anger over the incident, issuing a strong statement to the nation.
“I share with my fellow Bahamians enormous grief and anger about the tragic death of a schoolchild. We are united in our prayers to God, that he may strengthen her family and loved ones so that they may endure their heartbreak. We are going to turn this country upside down to find the criminal who did this and bring him to justice.”
The unlit road Adriel traveled daily underscores long-standing concerns about safety in remote areas. Adriel’s home, located far inland, required her to walk alone along a desolate path, leaving her vulnerable. The tragedy has reignited calls for improved infrastructure and better protections for children who live and travel in such isolated conditions.
Minister of Education Glenys Hanna-Martin also issued a statement on the tragedy:
“Today’s news of the tragic death of a child is every parent’s nightmare. We send our prayers to the child’s family, school, and classmates and to our country at large. This tragedy is an outrage of the worst kind and is felt by the entire nation. We pray that the perpetrator is swiftly brought to justice.”
As investigations continue, the nation mourns a promising young life cut tragically short, with many questioning how this tragedy might have been prevented. The death of Adriel Moxey serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need for vigilance, safety measures, and community involvement in protecting the nation’s most vulnerable citizens.
