Statement by the Parliamentary Commissioner Harrison Thompson on the Temporary Suspension Voter Verification Services
Immediate Release | April 1, 2026
I wish to provide a further update to the public regarding voter registration and verification processes ahead of the upcoming general election.
The public has previously been advised that verification is only required for individuals who wish to receive a biometric voter’s card. After careful review of current operations, and to ensure that all eligible Bahamians are processed in a timely and efficient manner, the Parliamentary Registration Department has decided to temporarily suspend voter verification services until after the general election.
At this time, our full focus will be placed on facilitating new voter registrations and voter transfers, so that every eligible individual has the opportunity to be properly entered on the register and assigned to the correct constituency.
I also wish to advise members of the public that persons who have lost their voter’s card remain eligible to vote. Once you are properly registered, you may present a valid government-issued identification, such as a passport, on election day and be allowed to cast your ballot.
For those who have lost their voter’s card and still wish to obtain a replacement, that process will remain available after the close of voter registration ahead of the election. The temporary pause in verification does not prevent individuals from accessing replacement services at the appropriate time.
This approach is intended to streamline operations, reduce delays, and ensure that the highest priority is given to those seeking to register for the first time or update their voting information.
I encourage all persons who need to register or transfer to visit the Parliamentary Registration Department or any of its satellite locations as soon as possible. Our teams remain fully mobilised and ready to assist.
Take the time to ensure your registration is in order and participate fully in the democratic process.
