The Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), the oldest political organization in The Bahamas, has always been more than just a party. It’s been a movement, a collective effort, a shared dream nurtured by those committed to a common goal: the betterment of our beloved nation. From the early days, when founders scraped together resources by frying fritters and selling soda water and juice, it’s been a journey of camaraderie and shared responsibility.
Today, as we stand at a crucial crossroads in our journey, we need to look back at the values and principles that guided us here. A disturbing trend seems to be taking root within our ranks: a shift from collective cause to individual gain. Some party members appear to have forgotten our core principles and are focusing on their interests, causing distress within the party.
This is occurring even as our PLP government has made considerable strides in various sectors. From attracting millions in foreign direct investment, introducing a lifesaving catastrophic care fund, increasing the minimum wage, to championing workers’ rights with union agreements, we have seen significant progress. Our commitment to education and youth development is unwavering, with initiatives to combat learning loss due to the pandemic and expand technical and vocational education to the Family Islands.
However, the internal strife within our party is threatening to overshadow these achievements. Some members now seem more interested in their own personal gain rather than championing our party’s cause. Would the founders of our party, the stalwarts of the women’s suffrage movement, be proud of what we’ve become? Would they recognize the party that was built on shared responsibility and national unity?
We’re drifting away from our shared spirit of nationalism towards a self-serving individualism, a shift that could lead us back into opposition. Being a member of the PLP should mean more than just seeking political advantages; it should be about believing in our party’s values and fighting for what we stand for.
It’s time for us to reflect on our roots, to remember what our party stands for, and why we joined this movement. We need to ensure that our actions align with our party’s collective cause and that we are not too distracted by internal strife to acknowledge our achievements. It’s time to remind ourselves that we are PLPs because we believe in what our party stands for.
Our focus should not be on side road contracts but on the advancement of The Bahamas and our fellow Bahamians. We must prioritize collective interest over individual gain and recommit to the principles that have defined our party for decades.
The spirit of the PLP is alive in each of us, but it’s up to us to ensure that it doesn’t get lost in a sea of personal interests. Let’s honor our founders and continue the journey they started, not for our personal gain, but for the betterment of our beloved nation. We need to remember why we are PLPs, and we need to ensure that our actions reflect that.
Let’s return to the ideals that built the PLP, where nationalism is prized over individualism, where we strive for collective benefit over personal gain, and where the spirit of progress prevails over all. It’s not just about what our party can do for us, but about what we can do for our party and our nation.
So, let this be a call to action for all PLPs. It’s time to put aside our differences and focus on what unites us: our shared love for The Bahamas and our commitment to its people. Let’s remember that the true spirit of the Progressive Liberal Party lies in unity, selflessness, and progress. Together, we can ensure that this spirit continues to guide our party and our nation towards a brighter future
