The inauguration of the new cruise port was hailed as a momentous occasion by Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis, who recognized its significance in the ongoing transformation of Nassau. On Friday, he emphasized the crucial role of the port in revitalizing the downtown area, acknowledging its historical, cultural, and economic importance.
Addressing the challenges associated with downtown redevelopment, Mr. Davis reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to breathing new life into Nassau’s city center. Bold steps are being taken to address these challenges, including the demolition of existing eyesores to create space for new developments.
The primary goal of the new port is to offer visitors an immersive experience in the heritage, creativity, and excellence of Nassau. With a total project cost of $300 million, the expansion of port capacity is accompanied by the addition of attractions such as a Junkanoo museum and an amphitheater.
During his speech, Prime Minister Davis called upon investors to play a vital role in shaping the future of Nassau, creating a vibrant and prosperous urban center that will instill a sense of pride in all residents.
The grand opening ceremony of the port was a star-studded affair, graced by notable personalities including American model Tyson Beckford and actor Anthony Anderson. Spectacular live performances, a mesmerizing Junkanoo rush-out, and a captivating mini-drone light show illuminated the sky, adding to the festive atmosphere.
“As we progress with our ongoing redevelopment plans, we aim to redefine the interaction between visitors and locals in downtown Nassau,” stated Mr. Davis. He emphasized the importance of grounding Bay Street and its surroundings in the authentic Bahamian experience, showcasing the finest elements of the nation’s culture, people, and way of life.
The port stands as a testament to this vision, expanding capacity and enhancing offerings. The extensive redevelopment project not only brings economic benefits but also provides numerous opportunities for Bahamian ownership and employment. Over 70 Bahamian businesses, ranging from food vendors to craft stores, will occupy designated areas, ensuring a vibrant and inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Mr. Davis also acknowledged a partnership with the University of The Bahamas, which includes a dedicated space for culinary students to gain valuable experience while showcasing Bahamian cuisine.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to revitalizing the city, Mr. Davis stressed that steps are being taken to address existing challenges, including the removal of eyesores and the creation of space for new developments.
Nassau Cruise Port CEO Mike Maura highlighted the extensive nature of the project, pointing out the inclusion of a mega-yacht berth, a ferry terminal with 16 berths, and a west marina with 14 berths, resulting in an impressive 1.9 miles of vessel berthing at Nassau Cruise Port.
While the pandemic temporarily hindered the industry’s growth, Maura expressed confidence in the resurgence of cruising, with record-breaking forecasted growth on the horizon. He highlighted the recent achievement of welcoming 20,554 passengers in a single day, a testament to Nassau’s enduring appeal as a premier cruise destination.
