The fear of crime has been compounded by the lousy coverage given by the local media because they can not help themselves from highlighting the murder’s frequency on its front page every day.
The Guardian and Tribune salivate by showing dead bodies like in Beirut, Gaza, or Ukraine. Headlines blazoned, “MORE MURDERS!” It’s terrible optics.
Are we doing our best to put the Bahamas in the best light? What do we gain by bad-mouthing the Bahamas for the world to get the story and use it against us?
CBS were immediately dispatched, from what they saw in the local media. There could be a correlation between the local and its affiliates abroad.
We believe a local newspaper invited the foreign press to visit a murder scene and now blames the government.
Why would experienced journalists want to expose this intoxicating footage of people lying dead in the streets? How can anyone get satisfaction from doing so?
Candia Dames and the like could care less about what damage has been done, only how many papers were sold. It is easy to conclude that she profits from the high sales volume.
So protecting the country is further from the editor’s mind, only the bottom line.
The Gothcha moment with the prime minister was despicable. Still, it did not negate the fact that the mainstream media has created a platform for criminals to display their copycat murders on the front page of a newspaper that is oblivious to the pain caused to the country.
Sadly, these editors are numb to the plight of fear that has gripped the country from the recent frequency of murders.
We must not resist calling out these mercenaries and saying unequivocally that the press is only looking out for their bottom line, not the interest of the Bahamian people.
