Police in their quest to crack down on the proliferation of illegal firearms are baffled tonight.
In what is perhaps the most alarming seizure in recent months, police have seized a rocket-propelled grenade launcher discovered hidden beneath an abandoned stove in a bushy area off Tonique Williams-Darling Highway.
Officers assigned to Operation Black Scorpion made the discovery shortly after 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 6, with assistance from the Anti-Terrorism Unit and Canine Support Unit.
According to police, officers acting on information proceeded to a bushy area on the southern side of Pride Estates, off Tonique Williams-Darling Highway. Upon arrival, officers searched an abandoned stove and found a green camouflage bag underneath it. Further examination of the bag revealed an RPG launcher.
Police seized the weapon, which will be processed as evidence.
Let us be clear about what this means. This is no longer about handguns and high-powered rifles. An RPG launcher is a weapon of war, designed to destroy armoured vehicles and buildings. Its presence in a bush in Pride Estates should send a chill down the spine of every law-abiding citizen.
Who brought it here? Who was it intended for? And how many more military-grade weapons are hidden in our bushes?
The investigation remains ongoing. Police are appealing to members of the public with information to contact 911, 919, their nearest police station, or CID at 502-9991.
