Nassau, The Bahamas — The Bahamas Public Sector & Health Professionals Union (BPSHPU) has reached a historic milestone with the signing of a $10 million Industrial Agreement covering more than 800 employees of the Airport Authority. This landmark achievement, finalized on May 4, 2026, marks a defining moment not only for the union but for the broader labour movement in The Bahamas.
Under the leadership of President Latonya Symonette, the agreement represents the most comprehensive and progressive package ever secured for the union’s members. It delivers significant financial gains, enhanced benefits, and improved working conditions, setting a new benchmark for industrial agreements nationwide.
For years, respected union leaders such as John Pinder and Kimsley Ferguson advocated tirelessly on behalf of workers, laying the groundwork for meaningful reform. This latest agreement builds on that legacy of perseverance and commitment. President Symonette now makes history as the first female Union President to successfully conclude an agreement of this scale, one that includes the largest package of incremental increases in the union’s history.
“This agreement is more than a contract—it is a commitment to the hardworking men and women who keep our vital services running,” said President Symonette. “It reflects our determination to secure fair compensation, dignity on the job, and real opportunities for advancement.”
Key Highlights of the Agreement:
Financial Benefits
- Introduction of salary loan facilities through the Airport Authority
- Cost-of-living index-based percentage payments
- Lump sum payments
- General salary increases across all eligible staff.
Leave Enhancements
- Expanded sick leave, vacation leave, and compassionate leave
- Introduction of birthday leave for employees.
Allowances & Premiums
- Increased shift premiums
- Meal vouchers for overtime work
- Implementation of banking hour provisions
Performance & Policy Improvements

This agreement signals a new era of leadership—one defined by results, accountability, and forward-thinking advocacy. It underscores the union’s unwavering commitment to improving its members’ lives and advancing labour relations standards in The Bahamas.
As the BPSHPU celebrates this achievement, it stands as a powerful reminder that with vision, resilience, and bold representation, meaningful progress for Bahamian workers is not only possible—it is inevitable.
Also present was Dwayne Woods, president of the NCTUB, who congratulated Symonette and the Airport Authority on reaching this milestone and agreed that it is a good sign for the formation of such relationships to advance the union, workers, and the country, in the spirit of respect and a harmonious working atmosphere.
