Jonquel Jones, Our Greatest Ambassador Deserves More Than Applause

Every nation dreams of having ambassadors who project its name onto the world stage. The Bahamas has one of the finest in Jonquel Jones, yet we continue to underestimate the value of what she has accomplished.

Jones has once again placed The Bahamas in the international spotlight, this time by making history as the 2026 WNBA All-Star Game MVP. It is another remarkable chapter in a career that has been defined not by fleeting success, but by sustained excellence. She now stands alone as the first player in WNBA history to win the league’s Regular Season MVP, Commissioner’s Cup MVP, Finals MVP and All-Star Game MVP. That is not merely an athletic achievement—it is a global branding opportunity for The Bahamas.

Countries spend millions of dollars on tourism campaigns hoping to achieve the kind of worldwide exposure that Jonquel Jones delivers every time she steps onto a basketball court. Television broadcasts, sports networks, social media and newspapers around the world mention her name alongside her homeland. That kind of publicity cannot be bought. It is earned through excellence.

The question is whether The Bahamas truly appreciates what it has.

We have named highways after athletes who captured a single Olympic gold medal before fading from the sporting landscape. Those honours were deserved. But if one extraordinary moment warrants national recognition, what should we do for someone who has performed at the highest level year after year, carrying the Bahamian flag with dignity, humility and consistency?

Recognition should not depend on popularity or the sport an athlete plays. It should reflect sustained contribution to the country’s reputation. Young Bahamians now have a role model whose success is built on discipline, perseverance and professionalism.

The time has come for the Government, corporate Bahamas and sporting authorities to honour Jones in a manner befitting her historic accomplishments. Whether it is a national sporting complex, a scholarship programme, a national day of recognition or another permanent tribute, the gesture should reflect the magnitude of her contribution.

Countries are often remembered through the achievements of their greatest ambassadors. Jonquel Jones has become one of ours. The exposure she has generated is priceless, the pride she has inspired is immeasurable, and the legacy she is building deserves more than applause.

It deserves lasting recognition.
