Restoring Respect and Constitutional Literacy in the Bahamas

The recent outcry highlighting a profound misunderstanding of how our government operates underscores a crisis of civic education. As “high-profile” and popular personality Richard Johnson passionately points out, an alarming sense of entitlement has reduced the Office of the Prime Minister to a place of daily disrespect. Receptionists are routinely bombarded with unreasonable, presumptuous demands from citizens expecting instant access and arbitrary payouts, taking Prime Minister Davis’s good nature for granted.
This appalling disrespect stems directly from widespread ignorance of our Constitution and government bureaucracy. No functioning democracy accommodates such chaotic expectations.
Education is our most urgent remedy. Minister Cooper must immediately implement a mandatory civics and constitutional curriculum in schools, starting from junior high. By teaching students how Parliament operates, the necessity of checks and balances, and the realities of public administration, we can equip the next generation with the knowledge they desperately need. To save our democratic institutions and restore respect to our leaders, we must teach our children how government truly works.
