The Progressive Liberal Party’s (PLP) upcoming election for Chairman has drawn significant attention from both its members and supporters. Today, it was clear that the party’s parliamentary caucus is unified behind the Leader and Deputy Leader’s endorsement of Fred Mitchell for the coveted position.
Fred Mitchell has communicated to his colleagues that this will be the final time he will contend for the chairman’s position. Moreover, he pledged to actively collaborate with the party to groom a successor for the 2026 elections. This move is seen as Mitchell’s commitment to the party’s future and ensuring continuity in leadership.
However, the election process hasn’t been without its share of internal dynamics. Deputy Chairman Robyn Lynes, initially indicating that she would not contest the chairman’s position in a bid to maintain unity, has apparently had a change of heart. This shift has been met with disappointment by several party supporters. There are speculations within the PLP that Shane Gibson might be Lynes’ secret supporter or “Dark Horse.” Some even anticipate that Gibson might withdraw his candidature, leaving the battle for the chairmanship between Lynes and Mitchell.
The female representation in the PLP has come out strongly in support of Mitchell. Notable Members of Parliament such as Lisa Rahming, Pia Rolle, Jobeth Coleby Davis, Leslia Brice, Speaker of The House Patrecia Deaxue, and Ginger Moxey have all endorsed him. While many might view this as a potential gender-based decision, these female MPs have emphasized that their support stems from Mitchell’s mentorship and his ability to bolster both the party leader and the party’s initiatives. They’ve reiterated that this isn’t a gender contest but rather a choice of competence and experience.
Glenys Hanna Martin, a respected figure in the party, has yet to announce her preference for the chairmanship. However, she has always been admired for her gracious approach to politics.
Inside sources have also confirmed that the Progressive Liberal Party Chairman of the Women’s Branch, along with the Leader of the PLP, are endorsing Fred Mitchell for Chairman.
The upcoming elections promise to be crucial for the party’s future direction, and the unanimous support for Mitchell could be a pivotal moment in defining the PLP’s leadership for the next few years.
