NASSAU – In a significant development for the Progressive Liberal Party’s upcoming convention, Danny Johnson has been chosen as the Campaign Manager for Fred Mitchell’s reelection campaign. This comes at a time when the incumbent Chairman, Fred Mitchell, is gearing up for a three-way contest against former Cabinet Minister Shane Gibson and Deputy Chairman Robyn Lynes.
A message from Fred Mitchell sent via the Parliamentary Caucus chat of the Progressive Liberal Party read: “Good morning colleagues… I seek your support and your vote. I thank both the Leader and Deputy Leader and all other colleagues who signed the nomination papers and those who gave expressions of support. My best wishes to you all.”
Fred Mitchell’s message underscores the unwavering support he has garnered from his Cabinet colleagues, the PLP leadership, and the party resources. With such an endorsement, the Chairman is in a formidable position for his reelection bid.
Interestingly, while nominations for PLP offices closed last Thursday, there was no one keen to challenge PLP leader Philip “Brave” Davis and deputy leader Chester Cooper. This is an indication of the strong support and unity within the party’s upper echelons.
The announcement of Danny Johnson, known for his strategic acumen, only solidifies Mitchell’s campaign structure. The PLP leadership is keen to minimize resource wastage, especially with a looming by-election. This is particularly essential given that the Deputy Chairman Robyn Lynes had previously assured Party Leader Philip Davis of her decision not to contest against the Chairman – a commitment she seems to have retracted.
In contrast to the unity displayed by the PLP, the Free National Movement is currently grappling with internal disputes. The solidarity shown by the PLP and the backing of Fred Mitchell by prominent party members hints at a focused approach as they head towards the convention on November 9 and 10.
With the political landscape shaping up intriguingly, all eyes will be on the convention to witness how the dynamics play out.
