Following a comprehensive investigation by the police, Prime Minister Philip Davis has taken the decisive step of firing Mr. Kirk Cornish, the Parliamentary Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister.
In a statement, Prime Minister Davis said, “I have requested and accepted the resignation of Mr. Kirk Cornish as Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister. His service to the government and people of The Bahamas is acknowledged with gratitude.”
The abrupt resignation and subsequent firing come after the independent Director of Public Prosecutions found sufficient evidence to bring charges against Cornish. However, in his statement, the Prime Minister refrained from further commenting on the legal proceedings, emphasizing the sanctity and independence of the judicial process. He assured the residents of North Abaco that relief and opportunities in their communities would not be hindered by the recent events.
In a personal statement released on Tuesday, 8th August 2023, Mr. Cornish asserted his innocence and referred to the charges against him as “totally false.” He appealed to the residents of North Abaco, stressing his commitment to serve them even amidst the ongoing legal proceedings. He remains confident that the judicial process will ultimately vindicate him, hinting at a possible political vendetta. “The facts will show that this is a case of a break up manipulated and exploited for political reasons – and nothing more,” Cornish mentioned.
The seriousness of the allegations became apparent when the police released their official statement. According to their reports, a 35-year-old female from S.C. Bootle Highway lodged a complaint on Friday, 7th April 2023, alleging that she was sexually assaulted and threatened by a male known to her. As a result, a 48-year-old male from Abaco is set to be arraigned on charges of Sexual Assault and Threats of Death on Wednesday, 9th August 2023, at the Magistrate Courts in Nassau, Bahamas.
The unfolding events have sent shockwaves throughout the country, particularly in the political corridors of Nassau. As the legal procedures progress, the nation watches with bated breath to see how this high-profile case will impact the political landscape and the community of North Abaco.
The Bahamas Herald will continue to monitor this story and provide updates as they become available.
