As the May 12, 2026, general election approaches, the Free National Movement (FNM) appears to have pivoted from a policy-based campaign to one of suspicion. With recent polling data showing the FNM trailing the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) by a staggering margin—some internal and public metrics suggesting a gap as wide as 35%—the opposition’s strategy has shifted toward undermining the very foundation of our democracy: the parliamentary process.
A Pattern of “Crying, Wolf”
For weeks, the FNM has maintained a steady drumbeat of alarmism. The “playbook” is now transparently clear: cast enough doubt on the electoral process so that any result can be challenged or delegitimised. We have seen this pattern escalate through several stages:
- Documentation Distrust: First, they raised concerns over the acquisition of voter cards and passport requirements.
- The “Dead Man” Trope: They then resorted to the tired narrative of “dead people” on the register.
- Voter Ineligibility: Most recently, they have made unsubstantiated claims that ineligible individuals have registered without proper documentation.
Much Ado About Nothing
The latest act in this political theatre features Leader Michael Pintard, Deputy Leader Shanendon Cartwright (the newly created St. James constituency), and Michela E. Barnett-Ellis (the heir apparant to HUbert Minnis) Their recent public outcry regarding the revised voter register is a classic “red herring.” Despite the Parliamentary Registration Department’s efforts to modernize the process with biometric cards, the FNM continues to act as if there is a conspiracy afoot.
This isn’t about transparency; it’s about distraction. When a party sees numbers that “make their heads spin,” the natural impulse is to find a scapegoat. By making “much ado about nothing,” they hope to hoodwink the public into believing the system is rigged.
“A drowning man will grasp at a straw.” — This old adage perfectly captures the FNM’s current state.
The Bottom Line
The Bahamian people are not fools. They recognize that these tactics are born of desperation rather than a genuine concern for election integrity. While the FNM tries to sow seeds of doubt to explain away their projected losses, the electorate remains focused on the issues that matter. In the end, the “playbook” of “Politricking” will likely fail because Bahamians value the stability of our democracy over the “puerile antics” of a party in retreat.
